Know your monsters, Know yourself: from boogie men to Dr. Jeffrey Jerome Cohen

April 4, 2011

Sometimes, it’s important to pay attention to the darker sides of life.  They too are teachers.  They too inspire.

The monsters we create–from experiences, fears, insecurities, childhood fancy or anything else–can be transformative.

I was first introduced to the complexity of human dilemma surrounding the creation and existence of “monsters” through the work of Jeffrey Jerome Cohen.  His book Monster Culture is a must read for anyone interested in understanding human society and the monsters we create.  Specifically, his chapter on the “Seven Theses” of Monster Culture is PHENOMENAL.

This link will take you to a wonderful summary of that chapter.
