The Cost of Things

Lunch at a semi-fancy restaurant...about 13 soles

Here in Peru, things cost in soles (pronounced SOH-leys) and how much things cost is quite interesting:

for 50 centimos (about 18 American cents) I can get:

a large chunk of cracked coconut to eat
a piece of cake at the Universidad Cafeteria
a small pack of crackers at some bodegas
Tea at the Universidad Cafeteria

For 1 sole (about 36 cents American) I can get:

a tomal or papa rellena to eat at most
street vendors or the cafeteria
a sweet thing to eat on the street
a 500mL bottle of water at a local bodega
one avocado at local market or bodega
4 to 6 bananas–depending on where you go
a kg of one of several vegetables
a pack of oatmeal to last me for about 3 days of breakfast
a bag of sugar maybe 1/2 pound heavy

For 2.5 soles (about 90 cents in American dollars) I can get:

a 2.5 litre bottle of water lasting about 2 to 3 days for 1 person
breakfast of 2 eggs on roll sandwiches and fresh made juice, coffee, tea or oatmeal at the Universidad cafeteria
a piece of chocolate cake at a less fancy restaurant
3/4 a glass of lemonade at a fancy restaurant
a taxi ride across town with 5 or 6 people in the car–depending on whose

bargaining before you get in…

For 10 soles (about $3.62 in American dollars) I can get:

two large bars of really good chocolate
lunch for two at a cheap Menu place with two dishes (soup or salad and a meat dish with rice and vegetables) and a pitcher of juice
dinner for one at a touristy restaurant
two mixed drinks at a touristy bar
an appetizer or a desert at a fancy restaurant
a taxi ride for one across town

For 20 soles (about $7.25 in American dollars) I can get:

twenty bags of fresh fried banana (chiffles) at a street stand
120 bananas at the market
a meal for 3 with change to spare at a nice lunch menu
a ceviche dish at a nice but not too fancy restaurant

For 30 soles (about $10.87 in American dollars) I can get:

a single lunch entree at a fancy restaurant
two course Menu for 5 or 6 people
30 papa rellenasor tamals
15 litres of drinking water
